During World War II, the Irish Red Cross built and operated a hospital in St. Ló, France after the Normandy town was bombed in July 1945. Hundreds of wounded soldiers took refuge at the Irish hospital and were nursed back to good health. Irish Red Cross volunteers also looked after refugees following the bombing of Britain, Belfast and Dublin. Messages were conveyed to 15,000 prisoners of war who had lost contact with Irish relatives.
The Irish Red Cross invites you to help celebrate our 70th birthday by taking part in any one of a number of exciting events we have organised throughout the year.
