Ten brand new ambulances will augment the Irish Red Cross fleet as part of the preparations for the provision of Red Cross services at next year's Special Olympics.
The Minister for Defence, Michael Smith TD, will launch the new ambulances at a special ceremony on Friday next in the Tipperary Institute, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
The new ambulances represent part of a €1.2 million investment by the Irish Red Cross at a time when demand on services is likely to increase. These new ambulances cost EURO600,000 and are the first half of a plan to introduce 20 new ambulances between now and 2003. The ambulances will replace existing vehicles in the 74-strong Irish Red Cross fleet, many of which were bought second-hand in the UK over a decade ago.
Red Cross Vice-Chairman, Tony Lawlor said the ambulances would be used to support the lead role to be played by the Irish Red Cross in the provision of voluntary ambulance and First Aid services at the Special Olympics. And, drawing attention to current security fears worldwide, Tony Lawlor continued:
"In the light of international events there is a general move to increase capacities within the voluntary First Aid sector to respond to emergencies in line with the National Emergency Plan and local or regional Emergency Plans."
The new ambulances will be deployed in the following Areas:
Clare, Donegal, Dublin Borough (City), Galway, Limerick, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Tipperary, and Wicklow.
