City Teens excel in Red Cross lifesaver skills

7 Oct 2003

Teenagers from Ireland's major cities topped the bill for life-saving skills, with teams from Limerick, Cork and Dublin all scooping prizes at this year's Irish Red Cross Cadet and Novice Competitions, while Galway, Wexford and Louth also won prizes in both individual and team categories.

And the competitions also marked a major milestone in the development of the Irish Red Cross, with entries from counties Kilkenny, Monaghan and Clare for the first time.

Commenting on the success of this year's national event which took place at the weekend, Irish Red Cross Vice-Chairman, Tony Lawlor said the number of entries and the high standard achieved in First Aid by the young Red Cross members was immensely promising.

"These competitions send a very strong message to Irish society in general, that young people do care about their communities and do want to make a difference. After all, they know that First Aid can make the difference when it really counts - between life and death.

"What can be a greater achievement than saving lives?" said Tony Lawlor.

Paying tribute to the Areas and Branches within Irish Red Cross, the Vice-Chairman said it was the commitment of longstanding members who have trained the young people and produced a new generation of Irish Red Cross life-savers.
