Typhoon Ketsana Appeal

Two devastating typhoons (Typhoon Ketsana and Typhoon Parma) have hit the Philippines in the past weeks. Typhoon Ketsana alone lead to over one month’s rainfall falling in just 24 hours, and caused widespread destruction and loss of life when it subsequently hit both Viet Nam and Cambodia. When Typhoon Parma then hit the northern Philippines just days later it triggered floods and landslides, as well as destroying nearly €12million in crops and infrastructure in the country.

Indonesian Earthquakes

Indonesian Red Cross volunteers are unloading the relief items of foods and drugs at Minangkabau International Airport, Padang, West Sumatra on 2 October 2009.

Irish Red Cross staff based in Indonesia have offered their help to Indonesian disaster-response agencies working on the earthquake disaster. Clean water, as well as food and shelter are urgently needed by people in the city of Padang and the surrounding region on the island of Sumatra, where the earthquake struck. The United Nations have reported the death toll is now more than 1,000 people, with hundreds more feared trapped in collapsed buildings. An Irish Red Cross water and sanitation expert has been offered to the Indonesian Red Cross (Pelang Merah Indonesia) which is leading the search for survivors and the provision of emergency aid.

Kenya Drought Appeal

The Irish Red Cross is increasingly concerned by the devastating drought that continues to take its toll in Kenya. The cumulative effects of three consecutive failed rainy seasons coupled with the 2008 post election violence have crippled food production with the result that an estimated 3.8 million people require urgent humanitarian food assistance.

International media have begun paying more attention to the food crisis in Ethiopia affecting more than 4.5 million people. According to authorities, the country has only 33 per cent of the food needs available in stocks.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is today appealing for almost €17.1 million to assist 260,100 particularly vulnerable people in Zimbabwe. This comes after recent reports that up to 5 million people may be at risk of chronic food insecurity by the end of this year.
