24,000 people in Pakistan benefit from Irish donations to the Red Cross

Twenty four thousand people will be provided with essential hygiene parcels and food supplies this week, thanks to the €75,000, which the Irish Red Cross has transferred to the Red Cross/ Red Crescent Movement's Pakistan Monsoon Floods Appeal. This has been possible as a result of the generous donations received from people all over the country.

The Irish Red Cross has called on families, communities, workplaces and sports clubs to organise fundraising efforts over the next few days so that essential services and equipment can be delivered to the flooded areas immediately.

Heavier than usual monsoon rains in north-western Pakistan have left over 1,100 people dead, 2.5 million affected, and 2 million exposed to waterborne disease and in need of emergency humanitarian assistance.

Mr. Dermot Cranny (72) from Bray was awarded with the Red Cross Award of Merit in recognition of his bravery as a volunteer during a 1965 rescue operation following a car crash, which claimed two lives.

The Irish Red Cross welcomes the decision by the High Court to order UPC Communications Ireland Limited to disclose the identity of a person associated with a blog site which has posted internal confidential material about the Irish Red Cross, and which has willfully distorted and misconstrued this confidential material. The material has been posted 'anonymously'. The Irish Red Cross does not propose to take any further action against UPC, and proceedings against that company will now be discontinued. The Irish Red Cross will continue to pursue the actual blogger or bloggers.

Six months after the Haiti earthquake, the Irish Red Cross continues to provide support to the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Haitian National Red Cross Society as they work to rebuild the lives, the properties and infrastructure of the Haitian community. This has been possible thanks to the generous €3 million donated by Irish people.
