Dublin's Q102 teams up with the Irish Red Cross to raise money for Haiti

Friday 29 January 2010

This Saturday (30 January) Dublin's Q102 Radio DJ Ray Shah will play the saxophone dressed as a Las Vegas showgirl outside St. Stephens Green Shopping Centre, all in aid of the Irish Red Cross Haiti Appeal.

The event is the Radio DJ's forfeit having lost in a recent Dublin's Q102 competition and will take place between 14:15 and 15:30, with the Q102 Blue Crew collecting funds for Haiti on behalf of the Irish Red Cross.

Speaking in the run up to the event Ray said, "I am delighted to be able to use this event as a platform to raise much needed funds for the people of Haiti. I would encourage anyone who is heading into town on Saturday afternoon to drop by and give what they can."

The Red Cross has been on the ground in Haiti since the earthquake struck over two weeks ago, delivering aid and treating those most vulnerable. Now, as search and rescue operations ease, treatment of the injured and collection of mortal remains continue to be the main priority, while long term relief efforts such as livelihood recovery and reconstruction are planned for the weeks to come.

"I would like to thank Dublin's Q102 for offering to collect for the Irish Red Cross Haiti Appeal this Saturday. All funds raised will make a big difference to the lives of the people of Haiti in providing much needed humanitarian assistance," said Declan O'Sullivan, Acting Secretary General, Irish Red Cross.

Donations to the Irish Red Cross Haiti Appeal have now reached over €1.3 million, however funds are still urgently needed to continue to assist the people of Haiti whose lives have been devastated. To donate log onto www.redcross.ie or call 1850 50 70 70.

Background

  • The earthquake struck on Tuesday 12 Jan at 12:00 local time, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale and shook the capital of Port-au-Prince and other areas of the country, with Haiti's West Province (pop. 2.2m) most affected.
  • A powerful 6.1 aftershock was felt throughout Port-au-Prince on Wednesday 20 January, with the epicentre near the town of Jacmel. Though this new tremor caused much fear, some injuries and some damaged structures to collapse altogether, there were no reports of deaths or other serious situations. It is thought that aftershocks will still continue to be felt for some time.
