Dear Friend,

Happy New Year and a very warm welcome to the Irish Red Cross e-update - keeping you in touch with our work, both at home and overseas. In this issue, you will find updates on our Christmas appeal for child soldiers, the current conflict situation in Kenya, as well as details of our special offer on the Helping you to care handbook, produced by the Irish Red Cross.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you most sincerely for your continued support and wish you all the best for the coming year.

With warm regards,

Irish Red Cross Co-ordinator, John Roche, reports from Nairobi on the Kenyan crisis.

Kenya is a country in crisis, reeling from post election violence which began in the wake of political instability at the end of December leaving more than 700 dead, thousands injured and more than 100,000 displaced.

Warm hearted response to Christmas Child Soldier appeal

This Christmas saw an outstanding response from the Irish public to support the rehabilitation of child soldiers around the world. An incredible €200,000 has been donated to date. Thanks to your warm-hearted response to our Christmas Child Solider Appeal, the Red Cross is working to rehabilitate child soldiers and reunite them with their families.

Jump for the Irish Red Cross

Are you brave enough to Bungee Jump or abseil to help us raise some much needed funds? I Love Mondays will be holding a number of bungee jumps throughout Ireland in the coming year with the proceeds going to Irish Red Cross.

In a life or death situation, what to do?

A colleague at work suddenly clutches his chest and complains of a gripping pain. The car in front of you crashes and people are all rushing to help. You are minding a friend’s baby and she suddenly starts choking. Every day in Ireland hundreds of emergencies like these take place, including a staggering 18 deaths everyday from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Would you know what to do?

Handbook to help thousands of carers in Ireland

There are currently an estimated 161,000 Family Carers in Ireland, a number set to increase as people live longer and hospitals continue to discharge people sooner. The Irish Red Cross, recognising the tremendous work carers in Ireland carry out every day of the year, has published the Helping You To Care Handbook.
