Cross-border Red Cross photography project begins

14 Oct 2004

The first stage in a two-stage photography project for young people from both sides of the border, gets underway this weekend.

Sponsored jointly by the Irish Red Cross and the British Red Cross, and part-funded by Co-operation Ireland, the project brings together 30 young people for a photography masterclass.

The purpose of the project is to get young people from troubled border and northern areas, to express the impact of the thirty years of conflict on themselves and their neighbours.

Youth members of the Irish Red Cross from Muff, Burt and Fahan, Co. Donegal and Dundalk will join with youngsters from schools in Derry and Belfast on Saturday next for the masterclass, run in the Ulster Museum, Belfast by professional photographer, Ruth Robinson.

The young people aged from 12 - 17 will learn how to focus and shoot clear pictures with a strong visual message, centring on the theme of conflict. They will also benefit from a professional photography exhibition about conflict taking place at the same time in the Ulster Museum.

The cameras will be loaned to the young people for a week and on the following weekend the results of their week will be viewed and discussed when everyone meets again on Saturday 23 October in the Red Cross Centre in Muff, Co. Donegal. A selection of the best pictures will then be compiled for exhibition in Ireland and in Britain.

Ends.
