The Irish Red Cross is appealing for funds to help the short-term and long-term needs of the victims of last week's railway explosion.
Several thousand people have been left homeless following the massive explosion which occurred last Thursday at Ryonchon railway station. Damage has affected a four kilometre radius injuring 1,700 people and destroying close to two thousand homes.
Local Red Cross workers were among the first to arrive on the scene, establishing five First Aid posts close to the disaster site and mobilizing 398 Red Cross volunteers.
As well as giving First Aid and other medical treatment, the Red Cross immediately supplied 2,000 kitchen sets, 10,000 blankets, 2,000 water containers, 2,000 tarpaulins, 1,000 First Aid kits and 720,000 water purification tablets as the blast disrupted power and water supplies.
The Irish Red Cross has already sent immediate aid of Euro 25,000 to help fund this effort and is appealing to people to help by supporting its appeal.
Donations can be made by cheque/postal order to the Irish Red Cross DPR Korea Appeal, 16 Merrion Square, Dublin 2 or by credit card to our CallSave number: 1850 70 70 or online at www.redcross.ie
