Irish Red Cross supports local Red Cross/Red Crescent Aid-workers

27 Dec 2004

Donations are urgently sought by the Irish Red Cross to fund work already being undertaken locally in the areas of south-east Asia being undertaken by Red Cross and Red Crescent teams.

The Chairman of the Irish Red Cross, David Andrews said it was now vital to respond to the appeal for aid from the International Federation of Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).Up to 16,000 people are understood to have died in the tsunami (tidal waves) that followed yesterday’s earthquake that measured 9 on the Richter Scale and affected Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Bangladesh.

The Irish Red Cross has already arranged for the immediate transfer of emergency funds of Euro 100,000 in immediate aid, in response to an international Red Cross/Red Crescent appeal for Euro 5 million.

Medical supplies to prevent and treat water-borne diseases are vitally-needed. Malaria, diarrhoea and respiratory tract infections are the major threats to health now as the search for the missing continues and the bodies of those killed by the impact of the waves or drowned, are being recovered and speedily interred.

Members of local Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in each of the countries affected have been mobilised to set-up First Aid units and distribute aid. They are supported worldwide by Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in every country many of whom have already made arrangements to send money, medical equipment, food & shelter items and skilled personnel.

David Andrews appealed for people to donate to the Irish Red Cross by credit card on CallSave 1850 50 70 70 or www.redcross.ie or by cheque or lodgement at any bank to the Irish Red Cross Asia Appeal, to Bank of Ireland account no: 1630 5917. Sort Code: 90 00 17.

Ends.
