President McAleese to present President's Perpetual Trophy

The Irish Red Cross is honoured to welcome the President of Ireland and President of the Irish Red Cross, President Mary McAleese to the Head Office of the Irish Red Cross to present the President's Perpetual Trophy at a special ceremony.

The President's Perpetual Trophy is awarded annually to teams who represent their county at the Irish Red Cross national First Aid finals and as such is a hallmark of excellence in life-saving First Aid skills.

The Trophy will be presented to the winners of this year's competition and also to the winners of last year's competition. The winning teams for both years come from Dublin Borough (City).

This year's team from Dublin Borough was trained by Frances Kenny and the Area Director of Units is Ann Healy. The team captain was Richard Flanagan and the team comprised Peter Ryan, Caitriona O'Brien, Pamela O'Brien, Lynn Dennany, and Cathal Lathrop. The team will go on to represent Ireland at the international First Aid tournament in 2005, the First Aid Convention in Europe, in Svidnik, Slovakia.

Last year's team - also from Dublin Borough - was trained by Gerry O'Sullivan and the Area Director of Units was Paula Lawless. The team captain was Fiona Geoghegan and the team comprised Paul Conway, Frances Kenny, Elva Watt (Dillon), Melissa Sullivan and Eithne Scully. The team represented Ireland at this year's international First Aid tournament, the First Aid Convention in Europe, in Austria, and came fourth out of 26 countries participating.

The presentation ceremony will take place on Wednesday 6 October next, commencing at 11.15am and finishing at 12.30pm at the Head Office of the Irish Red Cross, 16 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. Telephone: 01 - 676 5135/6/7.
