The Irish Red Cross Corrib-Mask Search and Rescue Boat saved a man’s life after a very prolonged night search, during which time a helicopter was forced to withdraw because its fuel supply ran low.
Search and Rescue leader Tim Clesham today reported the following:
"I would like to report that Corrib Mask Rescue were alerted by the Gardai and requested to launch at 23.10 hrs last night. A local man had gone out on the lake about 19.00 hrs and not returned.
We transferred the boat from L.Corrib to the Mask and commenced the search. The rescue helicopter from Shannon joined in but left when fuel ran low. Shortly after this the crew discovered the man on an island and used diplomacy to persuade him to accompany them to shore.
I felt that our crew responded well and that all the training we have done paid off. There was a small craft warning in operation and I was impressed with the discipline and mature approach taken by all. It was 5.30 hrs when the boat came to shore.
I must confess that it was with some pleasure that I radioed the Coast Guard to report a successful conclusion".
Ends.
