Western counties dominated the First Aid “All-Ireland” this weekend, taking top prizes at the Irish Red Cross First Aid finals.
Limerick continued with its golden run this year, taking top place in two of the four competitions and second prize in two competitions which were held near Abbeyleix, Co. Laois.
Shannonsiders won both the Novice Team and Cadet Individual competitions, while claiming the silverware in the Cadet Team and Novice Individual competitions Cadet Competitions are for Red Cross members aged 10 to 16 years, while Novice competitions are for Red Cross members who are relatively new and who may be competing for the first time.
Earlier this year Limerick took two medals at the European First Aid championships, setting the local Red Cross up nicely for the home match when these championships take place next June in the University of Limerick.
Mayo also achieved top honours, winning first place in the Novice Individual competition and taking silver in the Novice Team competition and in the Senior Individual Trophy.
Connacht neighbour, Galway, also did well – taking third place in the Senior Individual Trophy.
However, Cork, the county with the largest number of Red Cross branches, also found its way into the winner’s enclosure, taking first place in the Cadet Team competition and second place in the Cadet Individual competition. Teams from Cork also did well, with fourth place positions in the Novice Team and Novice Individual competitions.
Eastern prowess was the order of the day for Louth and Dublin.
First place in the inaugural Dominic Nugent Perpetual Senior Individual Trophy was very appropriately secured by Louth. This competition has been renamed to honour the late Dominic Nugent (55) of Drogheda who passed away last year after a short illness, having given a lifetime of service to the Red Cross.
Louth also took bronze medals in the Novice Individual and Cadet Individual competitions.
Meanwhile representatives from Dublin City (Dublin Boro) took two bronze medals also in the Novice Team and Cadet Team competitions.
Ends.
