Red Cross lifesavers battle to save lives

DATE: 2006 May 13

RED Cross members from all over the country will converge on Limerick today in a battle for top-billing as life-savers.

Finalists, officials and “victims” from all over Ireland are coming to take part in; the President’s Perpetual Trophy in the University of Limerick, which is hosting the event for the first time ever as part of the Irish Red Cross’ preparations to host the European Championships in 2007.

This year’s event sees teams from Cork, Galway, Limerick, Dublin, and Louth competing to be the national title-holder. This national event also serves as a knockout for the following year’s European event, so whoever wins this year will hold Ireland’s top life-saving honour during the year the Irish Red Cross hosts the European championships.

The President’s Perpetual Trophy competition provides an opportunity for Red Cross members to test their abilities – in what are often life and death situations – against one another.

Because it is often Red Cross personnel who rescue people from serious accidents, the competitions contain life-like “scenarios” or mock incidents where teams perform First Aid on seriously injured casualties. Injuries can range from limb breakages to serious head wounds, heart attacks and other conditions.
