The Red Cross continues to remind all parties to the hostilities that international humanitarian law requires that a clear distinction be drawn between military objectives and the civilian population and civilian objects. In particular, the Red Cross underlines the obligation of the parties to take all feasible precautions to spare the civilian population the effects of hostilities. Medical facilities and personnel must also be protected.
The Irish Red Cross announced today that it will send €25,000 to help feed people in Ethiopia and in Kenya who are facing hunger and a potential famine.
The Irish Red Cross is warning people to be on their guard this Christmas and to think safety in all aspects of their celebrations.
"Our message is a simple one - be vigilant about accidents around the home and when you’re out at social gatherings. Remember to put safety at the heart of everything that you are doing because accidents do happen at Christmastime," said the Irish Red Cross Vice-Chairman, Tony Lawlor.

At only 11 Yamikani Innocent is old beyond his years after he and his siblings lost both their parents to HIV-AIDS, turning the family into one of thousands headed by children in Malawi. The 'Innocent' children lost their father, the family's sole breadwinner in 2003, leaving their sister, then 10 to support Yamikani and his brother Aubrey, then only 3. Their mother had not long passed away either.
