2008 was a year that saw continued growth and achievement for the Irish Red Cross both in Ireland and overseas.

In Ireland more new branches of the Irish Red Cross were founded in 2008 than ever before – a total of 14 new branches; Moreover the numbers of people learning First Aid both for business or private leisure purposes also grew. There was particularly notable growth in the numbers of people learning how to deal with people with heart attacks and other resuscitation techniques -up by 67% for Basic Life Support courses and 83% for Defibrillator courses on the numbers doing so in 2007.

The Irish Red Cross aims to raise €1 million to help people affected by the floods disaster afflicting many parts of Ireland, it was announced today.

The appeal for a million Euro, comes in the wake of tens of thousands of Euro being given to the Irish Red Cross by ordinary people and companies since the appeal was launched 48 hours ago.

Members of the Irish Red Cross remain on standby in most areas affected by floods.

In Cork where the Irish Red Cross distributed blankets to people who had lost their homes as well as transporting Health Service staff to nursing homes, five 4x4 ambulances and their volunteer crews from Kinsale, Bandon, Middleton, Fermoy and Kanturk remain on standby to further assist in Cork City if required.

The Irish Red Cross is responding to floods in Cork and Waterford, in fulfilment of its role as an auxiliary to the State.

In Cork, a number of Irish Red Cross ambulances, minibuses and volunteer members of the Irish Red Cross were deployed yesterday evening and in the early hours of this morning, at the request of the HSE and the Gardaí to help nursing staff get to and from their places of work and to assist evacuees from flooded residences. The Red Cross is also responding to a request to provide blankets to some of those who have been forced from their accommodation due to flooding. A Red Cross 4 x 4 unit also responded yesterday to a flooding incident in Co. Waterford.

Mr. David Andrews has announced his retirement from the end of December 2009 as Chairman of the Irish Red Cross Society after serving 9 years at the helm of the Society as a voluntary and unremunerated Chairman. Mr. John Roycroft, Secretary General has also announced his intention to return to the Civil Service after the completion of a two-year period of secondment in the Irish Red Cross.
