On Tuesday the 12th of January an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter Scale hit Haiti's capital Port-au-prince and surrounding areas. It is estimated that 3 million people have been affected by the disaster.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, with 23 National Societies, the IFRC and ICRC, gathered in Montreal, Canada, on 9-10 February 2010. We solemnly expressed our profound sorrow for the devastating loss of life following the significant earthquake that impacted Haiti on 12 January 2010. As a group, we paid special tribute to the resilience, strength and courage of the staff and volunteers Haitian Red Cross and reaffirmed our solidarity with them throughout the concrete and effective actions in the relief, and recovery process.

The Red Cross Red Crescent is bringing life-saving health information to the survivors of the Haitian earthquake through a partnership with a local telecommunications company.
Haitians can now call a free mobile phone number to receive updates on Red Cross Red Crescent work to stop the spread of diseases in the many camps set up to shelter those who lost their homes in the 12 January disaster. These include a measles vaccination campaign and efforts to prevent acute diarrhoea

The biggest queues in Haiti's capital are not for relief distributions. Instead, huge crowds are visible every day at money transfer offices, and at shops selling mobile phone credit.

The Irish Red Cross also plan to send a Gender Based Violence Specialist to ensure rights of women and girls are protected
Approximately €1.2 million has been raised from Public Donations - €450,000 of which has already been forwarded to Red Cross movement.

Locating Family in HaitiThe International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is working closely with the Haitian Red Cross to assist people living in the affected area to contact relatives abroad. The ICRC launched a Family Links website where people in Haiti and abroad can register the names of relatives with whom they are striving to restore contact. |

Videos from HaitiFrom the first hours after the earthquake, volunteers of the Haitian Red Cross started to search and rescue the victims and give first aid to the injured.
