Red Cross and Red Crescent Action
To date, some 1.7 million people in ten countries have received International Red Cross assistance. Over 180,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid has been delivered, 30,000 locally based Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers have worked on the Tsunami supported by over 300 staff from more than 40 countries.
An overview of all current International Red Cross Tsunami operations in Indonesia reveals the following:
- The Red Cross Red Crescent has so far built 1,753 permanent houses in Aceh, with a further 2,688 under construction. In all the Red Cross Red Crescent will be involved in the reconstruction of about 18,355 homes.
- The Red Cross Red Crescent has built approximately 12,000 transitional shelters in Aceh out of an eventual total of 20,000.
- The Red Cross Red Crescent is producing about 8.21 million litres of drinking water every month in Banda Aceh.
- The Red Cross Red Crescent construction of 14 out of a planned 82 schools has been completed, along with 55 out of a total of 181 health facilities.
