Update August 2009: Progress in Malawi but Challenges Remain

Malawi is a landlocked country with a population of 10.6 million people, 85 percent of which live in the rural areas.

It is ranked 163 out of the 177 countries on the Human Development Index (HDI) and per capita Gross National Product is USD 210. An estimated 64 percent of the population lives below the poverty line (less than USD 1 per day). The country is vulnerable to a range of shocks and hazards including natural hazards such as droughts, floods and storms, disease epidemics, air and water pollutionand economic shocks.
