By Majella Forde, Irish Red Cross TraleeAiming to encourage their community members to live healthy and active lifestyles, Irish Red Cross Youth members in Tralee have been busy planning a series of monthly “Fun day Fridays”, providing an opportunity for members of the public to engage in healthy activities for both the mind and body. Their first event, a 5km Fun Run, took place on July 20th and was a great success which offered a healthy evening out for individuals, groups and families and at the same time helped raise funds for a worthy cause. Tralee Youth Members are encouraging people to get more active and as exercise of any kind helps prevent diseases, improves stamina, strengthens and tones, enhances flexibility, controls weight and improves quality of life. Keen to stay active themselves, Youth members took part in a 1 day soccer tournament on July 23rd 2012 in the KDL pitch in Tralee to celebrate unity amongst cultures. The aim and purpose of Red Cross Youth is to encourage young people to live according to the Red Cross principles – ‘Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Character, Unity and Universality”. Irish Red Cross Youth take part in a wide variety of activities , programmes and training, which are both educational and recreational. Irish Red Cross Youth groups focus on the protection of life and health, community services, international friendship and carry out dissemination of Red Cross Principles The next Fun Day Friday event will be an afternoon with older members of society, where its hoped that there can be an afternoon tea party followed by a talk from the Gardaí in relation to their safety, a fire safety officer for hazards around the home and a public health nurse and a GP to encourage them more to look after their health.
