Nora Doherty from Doneraile, county Cork, was shortlisted for 2014 national Irish Red Cross Carer of the Year after winning the southern regional heat. Mrs Doherty came joint-runner up for the national title at the annual Irish Red Cross awards ceremony in Dublin’s Mansion House on Friday, 14th November 2014. 53 Years Mrs Doherty has devoted 53 years of her life to caring for more than 10 members of her family and extended family. All of whom were sick or unable to care for themselves. Mrs Doherty, who is in her 80’s, now cares for her husband, also in his 80’s, who has hip knee and heart problems. Since 1961, Mrs Doherty has cared for relatives suffering from dementia, recovering from multiple strokes, and for some who were bed-ridden with age related illnesses.  As their carer, Mrs Doherty has spent more than five decades preparing meals for them, administering medicine and taking care of their shopping and housework. Carers in Cork Carers in county Cork give more than 315,101 hours unpaid care to the county’s sick, elderly and vulnerable each week.  Of Cork’s 22428 carers, 44.5% regularly work a minimum of one to 14 hours a week, whilst a further 40% work between 15 and 43 hours a week. Irish Red Cross Carer Award The Irish Red Cross Carer of the Year Award is an annual award open to all voluntary carers in Ireland. The award acknowledges the dedication of carers at home and in the community who provide an essential service to the vulnerable and display true humanitarian values. As part of its Health and Social Care Programme, the Irish Red Cross aims to deliver humanitarian services to vulnerable people and communities in need across the country.  In support of Ireland’s Carers the charity offers a range of resources and services; including the Carers Handbook, ‘Helping You to Care’ course, therapeutic hand care and skin camouflage services.
