Happy World Red Cross Red Crescent Day 2020

Home  Covid-19 Response  Message from our Chairman Pat Carey

CHAIRPERSON PAT CAREY THANKS OUR VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF ON WORLD RED CROSS DAY MAY 8TH

As the Irish Red Cross Chairperson, I would like to take a moment today, on World Red Cross Day, to personally thank you for all your hard work during the Covid-19 crisis. You have gone above and beyond the call of duty during this global pandemic.

You have shown, once again, that your dedication to your communities is unrivaled. Locally and nationally, Irish Red Cross members and staff have been supporting people who have been affected by the Covid-19 crisis. In these times it is especially important that we take a minute to recognise your hard work that goes on behind the scenes all over the country.

In the last few weeks, Irish Red Cross volunteers across Ireland have been instrumental in supporting communities during the Coronavirus crisis. The work of our volunteers has given a lifeline to cocooning people and isolated, vulnerable people who would otherwise be unable to access groceries and vital medicines. Volunteers have also distributed goods and food generously donated to our organisation by companies.

Using our ambulances and support vehicles, members have transported patients for chemotherapy, dialysis, and other medical appointments. Following a request from the HSE, volunteers evacuated residents from a care home where they were at risk of contracting Covid-19. Our volunteers have also safely moved people from Direct Provision centres into isolation units, at the request of the Department for Justice.

Irish prisons are still without a confirmed case of Coronavirus thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our in-prison IRC volunteers who have been working closely with prison authorities, distributing information about the virus and ensuring that proper infection prevention procedures are in place. The prisoners and prison officers have worked together to ensure that the prisons remain virus-free, which is an outstanding achievement.

In recognition of the sometimes-difficult circumstances that volunteers face, our Peer Support Network was activated, with 28 trained volunteers available to support you and respond to calls via the Peer Support helpline, if you or others are in need of support.

During this pandemic, our members and staff have pulled out all the stops to ensure that vulnerable people in their communities feel safe in these uncertain times. On World Red Cross Day, it is important to acknowledge our standing as vital members of the Red Cross Red Crescent movement and celebrate our involvement in one of the world’s most respected humanitarian organisations.

Our work here in Ireland, and the projects supported by the Irish Red Cross in Nepal, India, Yemen and Syria, are greatly enhanced by your personal commitment.

Pat Carey
