This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the Irish Red Cross and a number of events will be taking place over the weekend of the 20th and 21st September, to mark the occasion.
The Irish Red Cross building at Merrion Square North is just one of the buildings which will be open for Culture Night as we invite the public to visit and learn about the history and work of our Society over the past 80 years. Together with the staff, Joe Millar, an Irish Red Cross volunteer who is also the archivist of the Irish Red Cross, will be on hand to showcase Irish Red Cross memorabilia and artifacts on the ground and first floor of our headquarters.
2019 is not only a year in which we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Irish Red Cross but it is also the 70th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions. Therefore we are delighted to have Dr. Jim Holohan as our guest speaker and who will give a talk at 6pm on Friday 20th September. Jim has just completed a significant academic work which will be published next year on the Cáin Adomnáin, or ‘Law of Innocents’ as it is often referred to. Promulgated in Birr, Co. Offaly in 697AD these rules are what could be considered the Irish ‘Geneva Convention’. Jim’s research and background material is fascinating and sets a context for what is sadly happening internationally today with so many breaches of international humanitarian law.
On Saturday 21st September, 16 Merrion Square will again open its doors from 11am-4pm. The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan will be present at 12 noon to formally launch “A History of the Irish Red Cross”. During the launch, the author of the book, Dr. Shane Lehane, who is an Irish Red Cross volunteer from Tralee, will present an enlightening summary of the history of the Irish Red Cross and our chair Pat Carey and Minister Madigan will share their thoughts with us. Light refreshments will be available after the launch.
Music will also be played live on Friday and Saturday by Irish Red Cross supporter Brian Wall, to create a warm and festive atmosphere to welcome visitors.
We look forward to welcoming you over that weekend.
