The range of training available to support the most vulnerable in Ireland. Health and social care training are provided nationwide by local community support teams comprised of Irish Red Cross volunteers. 

Awards First Aid course

The Irish Red Cross Awards First Aid course can be delivered to a range of audiences including people with intellectual disabilities. The Awards First Aid course is adapted for delivery according to each group’s needs, training developed in conjunction with Special Olympics Ireland. Upon completion of this course, each participant will receive an Awards First Aid pin and certificate. The course can be delivered over a number of weeks to groups within your community. The course has been delivered to a number of special needs schools and groups.

Modules covered: 

Calling for help

What to do when you have a nose bleed

Putting someone on the recovery position

Dealing with burns, minor cuts and wounds

What to if someone is choking or needs CPR

The Awards First Aid training is adapted for delivery according to each group’s needs. Upon completion of this course, each participant will receive an Awards First Aid pin. The course can be delivered over a number of weeks to groups within your community.

Psychological First Aid  

The training will prepare Red Cross staff, volunteers and the public to apply psychological first aid (PFA) to various vulnerable groups in the aftermath of a crisis event.

Training is designed for Red Cross volunteers or the public who may encounter a situation where someone is in psychological distress. 

Modules covered:

• What PFA is and is not
• Place of PFA in overall response
• Action principles: Prepare, look, listen and link
• Good communication skills
• People who likely need special attention
• Adopting PFA to the local context

Therapeutic Hand Care Practitioner Training Course

The Irish Red Cross therapeutic hand care practitioner course can be completed over a full day training session or two half-day sessions. This course teaches participants the knowledge for proper nail care, recognise nail and skin disorders or diseases, the techniques to provide nail care, full arm, and hand massage procedure in the therapeutic care service. Groups that have availed of the training include local nursing homes, family carers, MS Ireland, Alzheimer’s society Ireland and Irish Wheelchair Association.
