Restoring Family Links

Dating back to 1870, Restoring Family Links is a core service of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement which helps to reunite people who have been separated from their families as a result of conflict, natural disasters, political upheaval, migration and other situations of violence.

Together the International Committee of the Red Cross and sister Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies worldwide, have successfully traced hundreds of thousands of people around the globe through family tracing, emergency travel documents, travel assistance, and attestations of detentions.

And as a trusted and impartial organisation, the International Red Cross has special access to governments, relief agencies, camps and shelters that help reunite relatives who have been separated from their families.

People like Mohammad and Leila – who were both separated from their families while fleeing from danger.

“I was a member of a political party in my country - which opposed the government. It was too dangerous for me to stay and so with a broken heart I left my wife and family behind to save my life. Five months after I arrived to Ireland, the member of the Irish Red Cross Restoring Family Links told me my family would arrive in two weeks. I felt so happy that soon my family arrived in Ireland and at last we could be together as a family.” – Mohammad

"My name is Leila and I am from Somalia. Before I came to Ireland I lived with my two older brothers and my mum. After a year of being separated, the Irish Red Cross contacted me to say they had found one of my brothers and six months later my brother was with me in Ireland."  – Lelia

Thanks to the Irish Red Cross Travel Assistance Programme, both Mohammad and Leila were reunited with their families in Ireland.

But there is still more to do.

While the Restoring Family Links network has succeeded in tracing hundreds of thousands of people, there are still more people that need your help.

Your donation today will help the Irish Red Cross continue to reunite families separated whilst fleeing their war torn countries of origin or those who have lost each other on the migratory trail.
