International volunteer managers day 2017

Every year, the Irish Red Cross Volunteer Support & Development working group recognises the invaluable contributions of the almost 4000 volunteers within the Branch network. Our Irish Red Cross volunteers – from the Unit, Youth and Health & Social Care structures are involved in many aspects of service delivery across all walks of life.

However, volunteering does not succeed in a vacuum. Behind the droves of volunteers at Irish Red Cross Branch and community level, lies an equally dedicated group of individuals who are responsible for the coordination, support, training, administration and recruitment of our exceptional Irish Red Cross volunteers. These volunteer managers are experts in moulding volunteer passion into effective action.

It is important that we let these volunteer managers, be it an Area Director of Units, a Youth leader, or a Branch Chairperson, know that the spirit of volunteerism is enhanced and enabled by them, and to thank them. That is why we, the Volunteer Support & Development Working Group are asking you, our volunteers, to celebrate International Volunteer Managers Day (5th November 2017), by taking the time to recognise the work of your local volunteer managers.

While the spotlight is often pointed towards the amazing achievements of volunteers around the country, the efforts of those who work so tirelessly in the background - to capably lead and equip volunteers – can sometimes be overlooked. The theme of International Volunteer Managers Day 2017 is Be the Voice. The 2017 theme seeks to recognise that Volunteer Managers need to be so much more than just accomplished leaders of people – we need to be change agents and advocates for our volunteers and for volunteering.

Ireland is one of the top nations in the world for volunteering and it simply wouldn’t happen without all of our volunteers and volunteer managers. Chairperson of the Volunteer Support & Development Working Group, Mr. Ted Noonan says ‘we must recognise the superb leadership skills of our volunteer managers, and support them in any way that we can. The Volunteer Support and Development Working Group supports all Irish Red Cross volunteer managers to ‘Be the Voice’ and celebrate this special day’.
