Irish Red Cross addresses farm safety

Home farm safety

The Irish Red Cross have launched a training programme aimed at tackling farm safety and the large number of deaths on farms in Ireland today.

18 people have already died on Irish farms this year while 21 people lost their lives in 2016. This is why the Farm First Aid course recently developed by the Irish Red Cross is so important. It was launched by Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed on 20 September at the National Ploughing Championships. The course is designed give participants a basic understanding of key farm safety First Aid situations and their treatment.

They key areas covered on the course are patient assessment, compression only CPR, secondary assessment, musculoskeletal injuries, chemical poisoning, burns, electrocution and approaching an incident. A certificate is issued by the Irish Red Cross to candidates who successfully complete this course.

Tractors and machinery are the most frequent cause of farm deaths in Ireland and are responsible for more than half of the 18 farm deaths in 2017.

Livestock and slurry are also extremely common factors in farm deaths with the latter being a particularly pertinent risk at the moment as the deadline to spread slurry is in mid October.

The latest Health and Safety annual report showed that farmers are ten times more likely to die at work than workers in other sectors and that the most dangerous occupation after farming is construction.

Lisa Harrington, First Aid Training Manager with the Irish Red Cross notes “when you are able to treat an injury quickly, the severity can be dramatically reduced. Lives can be saved. First Aid training could be the difference between life and death. A little knowledge can help and lead to a better survival rate,” added Mrs Harrington.
