distributing free Carers Handbooks

Home  National News  Free carers handbook

To mark National Carers Week the Irish Red Cross announced it was giving away 10,000 copies of its 148-page Carers Handbook free of charge, and there are still copies left.

Boxes are available to Branches and Areas until 17 July and from August copies can be obtained from selected Citizen Information Centres nationwide. The Irish Red Cross Carers Handbook is a resource which can be utilised by any person who is providing care. Currently there are 360,000 family carers across Ireland.

Those who take on the role of carer, often without any formal training, may feel overwhelmed and vulnerable themselves and this handbook is a practical, fully-illustrated guide for those looking after someone who is ill, elderly, or has a disability, with comprehensive advice on all aspects of caring.

In a foreword to the book, President Michael D Higgins says “the level of attention and care given by family carers could not be matched in our healthcare system and therefore I fully support any initiative which provides support to them – such as the practical information provided in the handbook.”

Carers play a vital role in looking after the most vulnerable members of our society. This definitive guide covers topics such as adapting the home, bed comfort and palliative care while the book also includes step-by-step photographs which show you the best ways to carry out daily activities such as communication, personal hygiene, nutrition and mobility. The emotional difficulties which both the carer and care recipient may face are addressed and solutions are offered to help overcome some of these difficulties.

Irish Red Cross National Director of Health and Social Care, Aiden Lonergan said: “At any given moment any of us could find ourselves in a situation where we or a loved one are fully or partially depending on a carer. The Irish Red Cross wants to support carers in their roles and enable them to create a safe and comfortable environment for themselves and the care recipient. We hope that by distributing this book free of charge, the invaluable information contained within it will reach those who need it most.”

Supporting Carers locally

As part of its Health and Social Care programmes, the Irish Red Cross aims to deliver humanitarian services to vulnerable people and communities in need across the country. In support of Ireland’s carers, the Irish Red Cross offers a range of resources and services including the Carers Handbook, therapeutic care service, visitation service as well as a Carers App.

Local Branches and Areas can directly support carers by getting involved in the Carer of the Year award.
