The Chairman of the Irish Red Cross, Mr. David J O’Callaghan, this afternoon welcomed the announcement of four Government nominees to the General Assembly of the Irish Red Cross. The four nominees are: Mr. Máirtín O’Fainín, Ms. Mary Flaherty, Mr. Darren Ryan and Mr. Cathal Duffy, each of whom will serve for a three year term.
“Today’s announcement is yet another very important step in the process of change and renewal underway at the Irish Red Cross and we thank the Minister for Defence and the Government for their support. We very much look forward to working with the new government nominees in ensuring the Irish Red Cross serves those most vulnerable at home and overseas” said Mr. O’Callaghan.
These nominations follow the approval at Cabinet, on April 18th, of a Government Order that gave legislative effect to a new Constitution and governance structure for the Society. This new Constitution is intended to guarantee the independence of the Irish Red Cross and facilitate significant change in its governance structures. It was been developed in close collaboration with the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and meets the rigorous standards they set for good governance.
