Saturday, 20th October – Life saving volunteers from Kerry’s Emergency, Rescue, Safety and First Aid Services all gathered this weekend at the Carlton Hotel, Tralee for the second Voluntary Emergency Services Personnel Conference.
The conference, hosted by the Irish Red Cross (Kerry Area) was opened by Councillor Johnny Wall and conference chairman, James Hanlon. A main focus of this year’s conference was The Emergency Volunteer and the importance they play in Ireland’s Emergencies.
Ted Noonan, Irish Red Cross Regional Director of Units (Southern Region), spoke at the event about the experience of Irish Red Cross Volunteers who responded to the flooding in Cork this year. At 2.30 in the morning, as soon as flood waters hit on July 28th, 20 trained Irish Red Cross volunteers were ready to respond to the flooding in Kanturk and Mallow along with other areas. Ted said, “These Volunteers responded without hesitation to come to the aid of those whose homes and business have been flooded.”
Following a presentation, by Garda O’Leary, on Emergency Driving, the Road Traffic Act and Road Traffic Accidents’ a Road Traffic Collision demonstration was performed outside the conference venue. The demonstration aimed to show the destruction caused by Road Traffic Collisions as well as how the different Emergency Services work together.
The demonstration scenario was of a two car head-on collision, one stolen car driven by a drunk driver having crashed into another car. The Gardaí, HSA Ambulance Service, Irish Red Cross, Civil defence and the Order of Malta took part in the response demonstration. The organisation representatives worked together to ensure the scene was made safe; the driver of the stolen car was arrested and removed from the scene. The Fire Service removed the roof from the second car and the three casualties were stabilised and removed from the scene.
The Irish Coasts Guards S92 Search and Rescue Helicopter was also present at the conference giving the attendees an opportunity to view the equipment and learn about the sea and land rescues.
The Irish Red Cross Conference Committee would like to thank everyone who made this conference possible. The speakers, The Carlton Hotel Tralee, The Tralee Harriers Athletic Club, Tralee Town Council, Tralee Credit Union, The Trade Stands all the delegates and speakers that attended the conference.
