The Mayor of Kildare, Cllr Fiona O’Loughlin, officially opened the first Irish Red Cross in Ireland at a ribbon cutting ceremony in Newbridge today. Speaking at the opening, Mayor O'Loughlin praised Irish Red Cross volunteers, "For the service they give during times of humanitarian crisis in Ireland, such as the flooding earlier this year.”
Since arriving in Newbridge at the end of May, the Irish Red Cross shop team have received a warm welcome from the local businesses, community and residents. Samantha McGarry, shop manager, thanks the local community for, “the generous welcome and for all the goods that have already been donated”. Profits from the Irish Red Cross shop will fund the charity’s humanitarian programmes and services in communities in Ireland and around the world.
Through a network of 5,000 volunteers, the Irish Red Cross provide services around the country. These include emergency teams, who work as an auxiliary to the State during national emergencies, community care, youth development programmes, along with mountain and lake rescue services.
Internationally, the Irish Red Cross works with communities affected by conflict and natural disasters. Since the conflict broke out in Syria, the charity has supported staff and volunteers on the ground, enabling them to bring food, water and medical supplies to families and children. In the Balkans, the Irish Red Cross is assisting those affected by the recent flooding and landslides.
For the Newbridge shop, the charity is appealing for donations of women’s and men’s fashion along with household items and books. All items for donation can be dropped in to the shop Monday to Friday 10.00am – 5.30pm.
