Strong showings by Cork and Meath as Galway triumph at competition

It was a big weekend for Galway at the Irish Red Cross National Novice and Cadet Competition 2015 where they topped the leader board with firsts in four categories.

The Meath team scuppered the Westerners chances of a clean sweep in the team and individual categories at the annual First Aid event which was this year held in Portlaoise.

The competition also saw top prizes for teams from Cork and Dublin in the Jane Williams’ Youth award.

The competition featured teams from all over the Republic of Ireland competing in the 10-15 year-old category for Cadets and the 16-17 year-old category for Novices.

Tom Horwell, Vice Chairman, IRC said the competition had a strong attendance this year and that the standard of competition was very high.

“Galway are always a strong team and their pedigree shone through but there were some other superb performances. The team from Cork North East were also very successful and the growing strength of the Irish Red Cross in Meath was also reflected in the final standings.

“This year’s competition bodes well for the future of our organisation. We have a steady stream of well-trained and committed First Aiders coming through our Unit Structure who will do doubt soon be taking on full active duty in communities up and down the country,” Mr Horwell said.

The competition involves awards for team and individual disciplines. The competition consists of a series of stations at which First Aid and youth challenges unknown to participants awaits.

Competitors are then judged by experts in how they deal with the situation in accordance to their knowledge and training.

A special station for CPR is an annual fixture in the competition for which the Dominic Burke Trophy is awarded. The Galway came out on top in this category as well as in the Novice category where they won the Individual award; and the Cadet category where they scooped top prize in both the Individual and Team.
