The Wicklow Irish Red Cross Branch has won the National President’s Trophy at the annual Irish Red Cross Senior First Aid Competition last Saturday, April 27. Emma Gregory, Mark O’Keeffe, Willie O’Connor, Rachel O’Connor, Megan Lynch and Daniel Eccles lifted the top prize at Saturday’s event.
Explosions, water incidents and building accidents were amongst the simulated scenarios that the 170 competitors, all of whom were Irish Red Cross members, were tested in. Teams were judged on their first aid treatment, their psychological care of the patients and their safety management of the scene.
Of his winning team, Wicklow Area Unit Director Mark O’ Keefe said “I am so proud of the effort put in by each team member, the trainers and every member of the Greystones Unit who helped with the training. It’s an amazing achievement, particularly as three members were competing for their very first and second time. We would like to thank the trainers and Unit members who assisted with training over the last 3 months.”
The Wicklow team will now go on to represent Ireland in the 28th Annual First Aid Convention of Europe (FACE) held in Belgium in August 2014, attended by over one thousand members from the various Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies across Europe.
