Irish Red Cross Appealing for Hurricane Irma Donations
The Irish Red Cross has launched a public appeal for funds to help victims of the storms that have swept across Ireland in recent weeks.

Hurricane Irma is the first Category 5 Hurricane to make a landfall in the Caribbean since Katrina in 2005. Irma made landfall on Wednesday, the 6th of September on the Leeward Islands and went through the north of Puerto Rico, moved towards the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba and the coast of Florida in the US.

Red Cross volunteers in every country in the hurricane’s path have been helping communities to prepare, gathering relief items and sending first aiders to shelters. They are already beginning to support in the full aftermath.   Currently, major damage is reported in Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Saint Barthelemy, Saint Martin, but assessments of the situation are ongoing in each of the countries affected.

Given the strength and scale of the storm, and the early reports of damage, it is clear there is a need to support the affected communities with their most immediate needs. In this context emergency relief supplies are on standby in Panama and the Dominican Republic to ensure an immediate response is in place. The Red Cross has currently enough supplies to respond to emergency needs of around 50,000 families (approximately 250,000 people) but will need additional supplies quickly.

Pat Carey, Chairman of Irish Red Cross said “Even though we are still assessing the situation, given the strength of this Hurricane and based on our past experience with hurricanes in this region, we and our members on the ground believe there will be serious Humanitarian needs.” “Donations received will be used to support those whose homes have been damaged by flood water.” said Mr. Carey. “We will work closely with the local Red Cross and with the International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies to identify those most in need of our assistance and to identify what type of assistance is most needed”.

Anyone wishing to donate to the Irish Red Cross ‘Hurricane Irma” appeal can do so online at www.redcross.ie; by phone: 1850 50 70 70; or by cheque made out to ‘Irish Red Cross’ and marked ‘Hurricane Irma” and sent to Irish Red Cross, 16 Merrion Square, Dublin 2.
