Six Limerick volunteers took 3rd prize last week at the coveted First Aid Convention in Europe (FACE) competitions, which took place in Italy.  Niall Dunworth, Zoe Gogarty, Gerard O’Connor, Ann O’Mara, Kyna Regan and Orlaith Shinners, all members of the Irish Red Cross Limerick Area, represented Ireland at the first aid competitions, having won the 2010 President’s Trophy.

Donal Forde, Secretary General of the Irish Red Cross, congratulated the team saying “This is the 4th year in a row that Ireland has won a top prize in these competitions, this shows the wealth of quality that Ireland has – not just in volunteers but particularly in volunteers that are highly trained and highly dedicated.”

Forde went on to say “The six volunteers from Limerick are a credit to the Irish Red Cross and to their communities.  Their professionalism and commitment to first aid and life saving is commendable.”

The event showcases the very best skills in Europe. Every year over three million people in Europe are trained in First Aid by Red Cross and Red Crescent societies and this event highlights the level of expertise available across Europe.   Each team competing at FACE tackles a series of staged scenarios, all with mass casualties. Actors portray the casualties and the make-up is of theatrical standard and extremely realistic. Each casualty has a judge marking the response of the first aid team.

Irish Red Cross Volunteers, around the country, train weekly to ensure that their lifesaving skills are top quality.  The organisation also offers a range of first aid courses for members of the public and businesses.  For more information on training courses in your areas see
