Monaghan Branch of the Irish Red Cross Launch Social Support Initiative

Recognising the ongoing isolation faced by some members of the community in Co. Monaghan, the Monaghan Branch of the Irish Red Cross have launched “Are you Keeping Well?”, a remote visitation service to help those who might be in need of social support.

The trained Irish Red Cross volunteers are providing a phone or video call catch up to adults in the local area who are in need of a listening ear.

People who are interested in the free service can call the number provided and will be put in touch with an Irish Red Cross volunteer from their area who will then schedule a series of 15-20 minute calls over the following months.

Speaking about the initiative, Irene Kerr, volunteer with the Monaghan Branch said: “A lot of people have been experiencing loneliness and isolation due to Covid-19. A lot of older people especially have found this time very difficult, but it’s not just older people, young adults have really been missing their social supports over the last year too.

“We completed the Irish Red Cross online Psychological First Aid training last year, which gives you the skills to provide support to people who may be feeling isolated, upset or worried about the pandemic or other concerns. Over the phone we can go through some simple tips with people for keeping active and managing their mood and staying connected with people. Mostly though, we are there to chat to people who feel like they need the service,” she added.
