Health and Social Care is the provision of community support services and training to the most vulnerable in Ireland. Health and social care training is provided nationwide by local community support teams comprised of Irish Red Cross volunteers.

Awards First Aid

The Irish Red Cross Awards First Aid course can be delivered to a range of audiences including people with intellectual disabilities. This course is delivered by a number of suitably trained Irish Red Cross instructors who have the appropriate skills and knowledge necessary to deliver first aid skills to a range of audiences.

This course covers the following modules: 
• Calling for help
• What to do when you have a nose bleed
• Putting someone in the recovery position
• Dealing with burns, minor cuts and wounds
• What to do if someone has broken or sprained their arm or leg
• What to do if someone is choking or needs CPR

The Awards First Aid course is adapted for delivery according to each group’s needs. Upon completion of this course each participant will receive an Awards First Aid pin. The course can be delivered over a number of weeks to groups within your community.

Therapeutic care training courses 

Therapeutic hand care course

The Irish Red Cross therapeutic hand Care course is completed over a full day. This course teaches participants the techniques of arm and hand massage with the addition of proper hand and nail care provided in the therapeutic care service.

Course covers the following modules:

• Hand and Arm Massage technique and procedure
• Use of equipment
• Structure of the nail, diseases and disorders
• Practitioner preparation
• Precautions including infection control and hygiene procedures
• Contra indications and special care

Therapeutic hand and arm massage course

The Irish Red Cross therapeutic arm and hand course is completed over a half day. This course teaches participants the techniques of arm and hand massage provided in the therapeutic care service.

Course covers the following modules:

• Hand and Arm Massage technique and procedure
• Practitioner preparation
• Precautions including infection control and hygiene procedures
• Contra indications and special care

Hand massage has proved highly beneficial to those with painful and stiff joints relieving soreness and improving joint flexibility.

Support services 

Carers App 

This free app has been developed to assist carers in their day to day care provision. The app includes features on managing daily tasks of administering medications, meals, minding, appointments and reminders. Allowing app users to effectively coordinate immediate care needs between carers and care teams in a simple user friendly app. Additional features include care recipient profile, content of the Irish Red Cross carers handbook and carers "chat to chat" keep you in contact with all carers registered as part of your care team.

Irish Red Cross carer of the year award 

The Irish Red Cross carer of the year award acknowledges the dedication of voluntary carers at home and in the community. Nominations open around the start of the summer and an award ceremony take place in November.
